Roundtable: Exchange or Kōryū - the future of international theatre exchanges
In times of wars, cost of living crisis and climate change, what is the future of international theatre exchanges? These exchanges have historically been initiated by individual artists, groups, or festivals around shared themes, often creating an imbalance between the inviter and the invitee. How can we make curatorial practices more transparent? How can foreign and domestic contexts be integrated into these exchanges and explained to local communities? Following the year-long Japan-Britain Contemporary Theatre Exchange (2023–2024) in Lancaster and Salford, we will discuss these issues with participating artists and researchers.
