Converting point cloud scan data into .stl files for additive manufacturing and volume calculations

Press/Media: Research

Description

Digital scan data had previously been collected from a number of caves, accurately mapping the internal geometry and storing it as point cloud data. Lancaster Product Development Unit (LPDU) was then approached to convert this data into a format that could be used both to calculate the volumes of each chamber and to produce Selective Laser Sintered (SLS) scale models.

On analysing the volume data calculated for each of the caves it was discovered that the Miao Room cavern in China is the worlds largest cave chamber, rather than the Sarawak Chamber in Malaysia that previously held the title.
