Education matters was first broadcast in September 2022, and has recently celebrated its’ one-year anniversary.
The show aims to demystify the educational options for under-represented groups in these marginalised regions of Lancashire. Unveiling the power of education through sharing inspiring stories from members of the local community who have achieved success in their field of study or chosen career path. We celebrate the success of individuals in our community and hope by sharing their stories we inspire others to aim high and pursue lifetime ambitions.

The show delves into the most pressing issues affecting students, teachers, and parents. Whether you’re a student, educator, or simply someone who’s interested in the education system, this show is for you. We believe that education is one of the most important topics of our time and that it plays a crucial role in shaping the future of our society. In each show, we’ll hear from students, academics, experts and thought leaders in the field, who will provide valuable insights, ideas, and solutions to some of the most challenging issues facing education today. It will also help students, families, and the wider community in making more informed decisions about future educational options. Education Matters is hoping to bridge the gap between the local community and Higher Education, showcasing that education is a lifelong journey.
The show has covered a range of topics including UCAS applications, Apprenticeships, pathways to Medicine, Oxbridge applications, Access Programmes and general study advice. Over the year we have had many inspirational professionals on the show including Aamina Tanveer, who spoke about her career journey into Policing, Saima Khan spoke about her career as a Radiographer, Councillor Noordad Aziz shared his journey to qualifying as a Chartered Accountant and Mufti Zakwan Patel about pursuing a role as a driving instructor alongside his role as an Imam at a local mosque. Several students from the local community have also shared their experiences of studying at Higher Education Institutions including Lancaster University, Bristol University, Manchester University, UCLAN, covering various subjects including Engineering, Medicine, Law, Politics, Business, Geography, Accounting, English Writing and many more.
For several years now, Eleanor Dove and Dr Sayjda Talib have worked with schools, youth groups, faith groups, madrassahs in East Lancashire with the hope to raise the aspirations of our younger generation to enable them to achieve their true potential. Fundamentally, our work has made us acutely aware of the need to address the many ‘key influences’ within our communities who have an impact on a student’s educational/career journey, including community leaders, faith organisations, parents, teachers amongst others. Each has a role to play in impacting the choices students make and so we feel it’s imperative they are fully informed about educational opportunities to be in the best position to advise. This has led us to do a lot of work with Lancashire schools and madrassahs to provide careers and educational support to children during their classes.
If anyone is interested in sharing their educational and career journey on the show, please contact the station on info@pendleradio.org .
