'Knowing how to work with others is crucial'

Press/Media: Teaching

Description

Dr Peter Lenney, director of the Mindful Manager programme, which is part of Lancaster's Full-time MBA, is quoted in the Sunday Times in a story about the need for good leaders to identify, assess and manage the emotions of others.

'Personal development skills are often referred to as soft skills, but we argue that they are the essential skills needed to be a professional manager. All business schools touch on personal development in their MBA programmes, but our approach is distinctive in that it is the core strand of our mindful Manager programme.

'Managers' ability to reflect on their behaviour and how they work with others is crucial for their development. It's like learning how to sculpt - you don't learn by being taught about hammers and chisels. Equally, with management you learn from doing, from experience. We teach our students that merely having the MBA qualification will not help them become a professional manager and that they need to be aware of the limitations of the traditional approach. Teaching MBAs how to learn from experience is crucial in turning them into high performing managers.'
