This article explains preliminary findings from a project funded by the Estonian Research Council into the development of speech motor control skills in children. The research uses ultrasound to image the tongue while children are speaking. Findings indicate that youger children have not yet acquired full use of the their tongue muscles used in the production of complex consonant sounds.
