New book on the history of corporate governance

Press/Media: Research

Description

Dr James Taylor (History) has co-authored a book on the origins of corporate governance in the UK. Shareholder Democracies? Corporate Governance in Britain and Ireland before 1850, published by University of Chicago Press in January 2012, represents the most extensive survey of the early corporate economy yet undertaken. The outcome of a major ESRC-funded project, the book was a collaboration with Professor Robin Pearson (University of Hull) and Dr Mark Freeman (University of Glasgow).

"The findings will be of great interest not only to business historians interested in corporate governance in the Industrial Revolution, but to anyone interested in wider issues of power and representation in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. This book is a major contribution to the debate over what kind of democracy is needed within a capitalist economy." - Professor Martin Daunton, University of Cambridge.
