The economics lecturer Dr Jill Johnes of the Lancaster University Management School received a National Teaching Fellowship worth £10,000 last month for excellence in teaching. She has been researching how Islamic banks operate: "they are very cautious and find clever ways of getting round the Islamic ban on usury. Maybe Western banks can learn something from them." She combines an academic career with motherhood - she has three children.
