My research looks at how methane is produced and moves through trees in tropical wetlands. I’ll be studying how methane processors can differ between tree species and different wetland types.

My fieldwork spans from the wetland forests of the Brazilian Amazon to the peat swamp forests on Brunei, Borneo.  I’ll be trying to understand the source of methane in trees and whether the trees produce methane themselves or act as a conduit for soil-derived gas and whether this differs between tropical regions. This will be done using isotope analysis of both above and below ground processors.

I also aim to look at how land intereference can alter methane emissions from forests and whether this changes between the Amazon and SE Asia.
