China is contesting what we thought was the established idea of human rights. Some argue that China is a persistent object when it comes to human rights, they just don't believe in human rights. Well, that's just not true. And it's not that they're rejecting the idea of human rights, they're going that we accept the idea of human rights. We just understand the balance between human rights and sovereignty differently. And we have a different conception of human rights. 

My current research is exploring:

(i) How large states (like PRC) can shift the debate on human rights and other areas of international law

(ii) What International human rights law “with Chinese characteristics”  would look like

(iii) How (in detail) China is trying to change the discussion (eg at the UPR)
