Autobiography as Ethics

Project: Research

Description

Autobiographies enact a distinctive and valuable form of ethical reflection: the autobiographer steps back from the immediate and quotidian; considers how she has come to have her individual attitudes, projects, and pleasures; and judges her life as a whole - to what extent and in what parts was it successful, and to what extent and in what parts a failure? In this project, I take autobiographies seriously as ethics and autobiographers seriously as moral thinkers, in order to address central questions in moral philosophy: what is the nature, and what are the conditions, of the good life?
