Between Social and Scholarly Mobilisation in Iraq: A Spring of Feminist Consciousness

Project: Research

Description

This paper discusses the intersection between mobilisation by Iraqi women in the social sciences both in the Tishreen protest movement and in academia.

Layperson's description

This paper discusses mobilisation by Iraqi women in the social sciences both in street protests and in academia.

Key findings

Both academia and free speech in Iraq are facing a violent crackdown by state- and non-state forces. Women activists, academics, and lawyers are especially targeted for their advocacy around gender-based rights. Based on research interviews, academia in Iraq is facing deterioration as a result of this vicious crackdown, but those interviewed maintain faith in their mobilisation.

The paper has been submitted to the Middle East Law and Governance journal for review.
