Civil courage: Countering the harms of hate violence

Project: Research

Description

The Northern Ireland civil courage exploratory study consisted of research and public engagement activities from 2016 to 2018 supported by the Northern Ireland Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders. The research involved in-depth interviews conducted by this paper’s author with four victims of hate crime who were targeted in public places and where there were bystander witnesses who did not help or intervene in any way. The public engagement activities by the author involved: a presentation to political representatives and representatives of criminal justice agencies and civil society organisations at the Parliament Buildings, Stormont, Belfast: ‘Hate crime offending: the need for civil courage, 18th October 2016’; a radio discussion with a victim of hate crime who was ignored by bystanders when seeking help, Down Town Radio, 19th October 2016; a keynote address at the launch of the Get Real project: ‘The potential for using civil courage approaches to tackling hate crime’, NIACRO, Belfast, 16th May 2018; and the production and dissemination of an occasional paper—Hate Crime. The Need to Strengthen ‘Civil Courage’—(Iganski, 2018): https://www.niacro.co.uk/publication/hate-crime-need-strengthen-%E2%80%98civil-courage%E2%80%99
