Developing a posthuman approach towards the understanding of "writing systems"

Project: Research

Description

The aim of this project is to propose a posthuman framework towards the study of what have traditionally been called "writing systems" in literacy research. Traditional approaches have been based on a somewhat linear, restricted and Western account of the development of writing systems. Posthuman ways of thinking developed within and beyond Literacy Studies offer us ways of incorporating hitherto relatively marginalised or overlooked ways of meaning making. We seek to develop a new approach that has the potential to encompass historical and contemporary meaning-making, and have the capacity to look to the future.
The project is a collaboration between Julia Gillen of Lancaster University and Samuel DeJulio, The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Layperson's description

We are looking into ways of meaning-making that have previously been described as "writing systems". We offer a new framework that includes attention to technologies; orthographies; languages; the world.
