This project will allow us to establish a roadmap for future research, innovation, and impact projects to inform end of renewable asset life decisions. First generation renewable assets are already reaching end of life, with some going to landfill. There is a significant knowledge gap around decommissioning and circular economy solutions, and an integrated understanding of technological and economic viability, environmental, social and governance considerations is sorely needed to inform the renewable industry. Through a multidisciplinary, holistic approach, the academic and industry partners in this project will identify the relevant academic and grey literature, the current problems, practices and the most appropriate decommissioning decisions. Bluefield Renewables 1 (Bluefield) has already funded a £30K LU project (ERALD), will provide match funding for this project, and provide further investments in this area that can be used to support grant bids and directly fund PhD studentships. Outcomes of this project will be shared across multiple stakeholder groups and set up the agenda for the renewable asset circular economy market. This project will clearly establish the challenges, and best-known practice around reusing, recycling and disposing of renewable energy assets at the end-of-life, and produce a roadmap for future research.
