Iraq’s Tishreen Movement and Living Constitutions: Towards Self-Determination

Project: Research

Description

This chapter for the "Iraq Unruled" book edition by Edinburgh University Press explores the question of how Iraq's Tishreen Movement has created a generation of ‘living constitutions’ where the Iraqi individual is more learned about the country’s laws and the need for ‘rightful’ or ‘just’ ones.

Layperson's description

This chapter for the "Iraq Unruled" book edition by Edinburgh University Press explores the question of how Iraq's Tishreen Movement has created a generation of ‘living constitutions’ embodied by Iraqi individuals more learned about the country’s laws and the need for ‘rightful’ or ‘just’ ones.

Key findings

Protestors and activists in Iraq's Tishreen movement embodied a "living constitution" in the sense that they embodied the laws that they believe their society needs. Years after the protests waned, Iraqi activists are more informed about their rights, politics, and the laws and continue to work towards establishing their own sovereignty despite a resilient and corrupt political elite.
