Project: Research

Description

The goal of the project is to develop a sustainable electronic waste solution using biotechnology. Current e-waste recycling solutions are inefficient, costly, and harmful to the environment. The proposal is to adapt mining processes from bioleaching and phytomining to develop a biohydrometallurgical process for urban mining. Bioleaching has proven to be effective in mining of ores with low and diverse metal content. Adapting this technique to electronic waste could dramatically improve recycling costs, yields, and offer an environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional smelting operations which are high cost, ineffective, and harmful to the environment.
