Writing for Wellbeing For Survivors of Religious Trauma

Project: Research

Description

This project develops a new methodology in writing for wellbeing (WFW) tailored to aid recovery and wellbeing of survivors of religious trauma. Drawing on cutting edge research in the two distinct fields of writing for wellbeing (Adams & Ross, 2016; Elzen & Lengelle, 2023), and religious trauma and cultic abuse (Anderson, 2023; Jenkins, 2023; Lalich, 2023), my workshops create spaces where survivors can grow and develop through writing. My workshops are trauma-informed in working to help participants explore writing, emotion and storytelling while staying within their 'window of tolerance'. I use grounded writing techniques, drawing on craft, objects and materials to ground participants in the present moment.

In November 2024 I ran the first course in writing for wellbeing for survivors of religious trauma in the UK. Co-facilitated by a registered therapist, this three week online course supported 10 participants.
