Squirrel Learning has developed an innovative app (GoRead ) to support reading by young people. As the GoRead website states: “Your children will build up a full reading record across their entire journey through school”. It is recognised in the research literature that encouraging reading is not always easy with some young people , , and that their interest in reading may reduce over time . Schools in the past have supported young people in reading in a number of ways: choice of appropriate reading materials that spark young people’s interests and imagination; direct reading in classrooms; engagement with parents and guardians in reading to their children; monitoring reading practices. The GoRead app supports the practices that are concerned with engaging teachers, parents and guardians in monitoring the reading of young people, but also enabling the monitoring to be accessible to the young people themselves. The GoRead app stores a variety of data that are non-personal and identifiable, and while many schools have taken up the use of the app, what the data could tell the business is not at all clear at this stage. There may be useful insights that would come from the data that would support the growth of the business, but also would support schools, policy makers, publishers and researchers. This is the unknown that the business asked us to research.
