Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a major topic of discussion for many involved in educational policy, practice, and research. AI is without doubt an emerging technology, of particular interest to education through the facilities that Generative AI (GenAI) can provide, due to functionalities that may be offered through speech, text or image. Whilst it is possible to find many individuals who are strong advocates for implementing GenAI in educational practice, there are also as many who are strongly concerned about potentially negative effects. Considering this range of views, what is still unclear about the future is whether GenAI is likely to be developed for education, or whether it is for use in education, or even whether it should have a place with education.
