CPD workshop: Applying multimodal and critical media literacy learning designs and analysis in teaching across disciplines
Activity: Talk or presentation types › Invited talk
This part seminar, part workshop aims to support colleagues across disciplines in expanding their knowledge and practice with regards to applications of digital visual and multimodal media in teaching.
The seminar first reflects on the need for such approaches, in the context of digitalised education and learners' digital media uses, the post-truth and other global challenges. It considers approaches such as socio-materiality, semiotics and multimodality, arguing for a pedagogy of relationality.
It then moves on to the practical part. It introduces and exemplifies how visual data can be applied for the purposes of an in-depth inquiry in a variety of subjects. Such artefacts are termed 'inquiry graphics' and the approach an inquiry graphics pedagogy. An inquiry graphics analysis is exemplified, targeting students' critical thinking, concept development and critical media literacy.
Participants will engage in exchanging insights about their own practice and approaches to visual and multimodal representations, and be supported with a pedagogical model to think how to design their own activities with visual and mutlimodal media, mediated by technology, to suit their own teaching and subject needs.
