The workshop had the twin themes of emerging issues in biosphere-atmosphere interactions in a human-influenced Earth system, and how to build a successful career as an independent collaborative cross-disciplinary researcher. The 2½ day event brought together promising early career scientists and well-established highly-regarded senior scientists from all areas of iLEAPS science. The workshop sessions included presentations from senior scientists, panel discussions in which early career scientists posed challenging questions to the experts and practical activities and workshops designed to explore the issues raised in the workshop itself. Above all though, the sessions were informative, stimulating and fun! Sessions at the ECSW included: An overview of the current state-of-the-science and emerging issues in iLEAPS-related fields “Science sans Frontières”: How to build successful networks of partners and collaborators across disciplines, and across national boundaries. “We seek it here, we seek it there”: Current and potential future funding opportunities from around the world “Now go get it!”: How to write a successful funding proposal.
