Organisation profile

The Faculty's strategic aim is to produce excellent research that is both interdisciplinary and translational – it translates scientific and social scientific findings into practical applications for human and societal benefit.

The Faculty is organised into three Divisions supported by interdisciplinary research centres and groups, drawing together a unique blend of social scientists, health researchers, medics and biomedical scientists to work closely together on cross-cutting themes and discrete projects. Thus, while preserving traditional disciplinary strengths we are able to take advantage of our flexible structure to bring together researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds to provide an innovative, contemporary approach to health and medicine.

Many of the research areas within the Faculty are related to fundamental issues, with major research topics including the study of end-of-life care, disability, mental health, epidemiology, cancer biology, neurodegenerative disease, immunology and microbiology.

Alongside this, the Faculty also has important partnerships with other parts of the University that carry out related research. We also enjoy close collaborations and strong links with NHS and social care partners, health-related industries and the voluntary sector.
