Neil’s current research interests are in nutrient dynamics in groundwater-fed rivers, including in stream and hyporheic zone processes, with particular reference to phosphorus. Work is being carried out using high temporal resolution in-situ monitoring and passive sampling techniques to better understand the transport and transformation of nutrients in the surface and near-surface freshwater environment. Current research activities are funded by NERC grant NE/G001707/1.
Graduating from the University of Wales, Swansea in 2001 with a Master of Chemistry degree, Neil went on to spend some time working for the Environment Agency on projects investigating fisheries populations for the Forestry Commission and assessing the environmental impacts of historic mine workings as part of the Metal Mines Strategy for Wales. In 2004 Neil moved to Lancaster to undertake a PhD at the Lancaster Environment Centre investigating the use of the naturally occurring radon as a tracer in groundwater-river interactions. This work was closely linked with the NERC LOCAR (Lowland Catchment Research) program.
