Senior Research Associate
My research examines the effects of the Earth’s ionosphere on radio systems. At HF (shortwave) frequencies these include communications, over-the-horizon radars, and direction finding systems. I’m currently developing an online forecasting service for airline HF communications which predicts outages due to space weather (solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and solar proton events).
At VHF and higher frequencies, ionospheric scattering affects satellite communications, satellite navigation systems such as GPS, and space-based radar. I’m currently a consultant to Airbus Defence & Space advising on ionospheric impacts on the European Space Agency’s Biomass radar satellite which will launch in 2021.
