Research overview

My main role is the development and delivery of the Food Challenges online learning programme in LEC for distance learners.  This is a postgraduate programme focussed on Food Security at PG Cert, PG Dip and MSc levels.  I lead the soil science module (LEC.455), work with programme directors to develop the course, and tutor the online students, many of whom work in the food supply industry and are supported by Companies from the Waitrose Agronomy Group.  I am also involved in developing online CPD training for Waitrose, and am interested in developing other similar distance learning programmes.

My research background is global change ecology, with a focus on how land use, land management and climate change affect ecosystem function and global carbon cycling. I have worked on projects in upland peatlands, including setting up a novel warming and plant manipulation experiment.  My work includes Defra funded research looking at the potential to manage UK grasslands to provide multiple ecosystem services of carbon storage, nutrient retention and biodiversity, alongside viable levels of productivity; and a project on characterising landscape methane emissions.
