Starting from the reference to Wallace Stevens in Auden’s poem ‘In Praise of Limestone’, this essay offers a comparative exploration of their similarities and differences concerning matters of ‘belief’, suggesting that the work of each involves awareness of the relation between ‘being’ and ‘nothingness’, and that, finally, each makes the attempt—in Auden’s words—to ‘find the mortal world enough’.
