Abstract

An elegant experiment by F.P. Milliken and K.W. Schwarz (IBM, Yorktown Heights) and C.W. Smith (University of Maine, Orono) has thrown new light on the arcane decay mechanisms of quantized vortex lines in superfluid helium-4. Their work is described in a recent issue of Physical Review Letters (48, 1204; 1982).
