Abstract

The environment surrounding individuals can have profound influence. In schools, the influence of the environment on young people is even more important. The involvement of young people and the educational potential within the school environment are not always considered in research. In this paper, we review recent studies on the involvement of young people in a school built environment. The paper is organized into four sections: the involvement of young people in the school built environment; the origin and context of the school’s physical space; the relationship between physical space and learning space in the school; and learning spaces and educational practices. Finally, we highlight the potential for research development, including the characterization of the perspectives of young people and the impact of the school built environment on their education.
