N2 - Internationalisation is now a key strategic priority for many universities. As part of this process, universities are increasingly looking to build a number of key strategic partnerships with a small number of like-minded institutions. This paper, based on a detailed study of three such partnerships, seeks to understand and theorise the process by which partnerships are formed. In this way, by understanding the different stages involved, the paper also offers practical guidance for universities seeking to extend their international connections.
