FP7: OFELIA open flow in Europe: Linking infrastructure & applications

Project: Research

Description

The OFELIA project creates a unique experimental facility that allows researchers to not only experiment “on” a test network but to control and extend the network itself precisely and dynamically. The OFELIA facility is based on OpenFlow, a currently emerging networking technology that allows virtualization and control of the network environment through secure and standardized interfaces.

Within OFELIA, Lancaster University is developing an extension to OpenFlow to support the transparent caching of large media objects in a wide-area network. The goal is to optimise the repeated delivery of identical content, while allowing the applications deployed across the network to continue using apparently simple unicast flows. This system will also be resilient to cache failures by choosing caches based on availability as well as proximity. Furthermore, we will compare the impact of different delivery mechanisms on the users' perceived Quality-of- Experience (QoE), by applying an established QoE measurement framework to the evaluation of the OpenFlow-based transparent caching system.
