Collaboration cafe on tour - STEM outreach for younger children

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

19/06/2024

Sarah Allinson and Lucy Jackson-Jones shared their experiences of taking science out into the community and bringing the community into their science labs. They discussed the outreach activities they’ve done with younger schoolchildren, aged 4-14, from communities with low levels of participation in higher education. Working alongside partners such as North West Cancer Research, LUSU Volunteering and the Furness Education and Skills Partnership, their aim has been to use fun mini science experiments and activities to demystify biomedical science, pass on public health messages and raise aspirations. Participants were also able to visit our teaching labs to see some of the activities involved and have a go at one themselves – extracting DNA from a strawberry!
