Defuturing Futures through More-Than-Human Centred Design

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

30/06/2021

This talk responds to the defuturing of our world resulting from the current domination of both anthropocentrism and technocentrism within design. In particular it responds to, rather than masks, contemporary design contexts that contain complex interdependences of human and non-human actants who operate from their own independent perspectives creating the need for More-Than-Human Centred Design. I will build a theoretical argument for such a practice before presenting examples of how approaches such as Speculative Design, Design Fiction, and Experiential Design can be used to consider alternate more sustainable futures than those embedded within current design patterns and approaches.
