Whilst many designers cite Sir Chris Frayling’s seminal paper ‘Research In Art and Design’ in relation to their practice of using Research through Design (RtD) few realise that he is best known as a media scholar, or appreciate the context in which it was written, which was in relation to how the UK government could assess the knowledge produced through art and design practice. I will use this contextualisation to consider how I approach RtD working in an Art and Design School environment and use an example of a current project that consider how we might make Artificial Intelligence Legible to show how it unfolds through my own practice.
