Birmingham Bin Crisis Could Lead to Spread of Rodent-bourne pathogens

Press/Media: TV Interview/Appearance

Description

Piles of waste bins are sources of food for rats and availability of food during the breeding season exponentially increases their numbers. Rats, generally all rodents, are carriers of several viruses, bacteria and worms of public health importance. Their increasing numbers will increase the chances of spreading infections to people exposed directly (contact with contaminated material, with urine, saliva, and faeces) or indirectly (eaten by pets and carried mechanically closer to humans).
