Protecting soils in construction – new blueprint for local authorities launched

On the 22nd of May 2025, Lancaster University researchers, in partnership with Lancaster City Council and Cornwall Council, launched a groundbreaking blueprint aimed at enhancing soil management in construction projects. Titled the "Local Soils Model Policy and Guide," this initiative provides a framework to help local authorities in England integrate sustainable soil principles into their Local Plans. Funded by the EPSRC and AHRC Impact Acceleration Account, the project gathered insights from stakeholders in planning, development, engineering, and environmental sectors.
