Thirteen senior researchers and mentors from the UK and 31 veterinarians, researchers, and livestock industry players from the Philippines gathered together in Manila, Philippines for the Newton Agham Researcher Links Workshop titled “Novel vaccines and diagnostic technologies against emerging and re-emerging veterinary pathogens.”
Held last 4-7 February at the Rizal Park Hotel in Manila, this international research workshop which was organized by the University of the Philippines Los Baños, College of Veterinary Medicine and the Lancaster University’s Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences, UK through a Newton Agham Programme grant from the British Council and Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Dr. Muhammad Munir from Lancaster University and Dr. Dennis Umali from University of the Philippines Los Baños served as workshop coordinators.
The 4-day forum focused on recent trends and developments in the field of diagnostics and vaccines in the control and prevention of economically important livestock and poultry diseases. Discussions on veterinary pathogens of public health importance also took place. Moreover, the event encouraged initial links and partnerships among early career scientists and leading industry experts here in the Philippines and in the UK.
The Newton Researcher Links Programme is part of the Newton Fund Researcher Mobility Programme, a collaborative engagement between the British Council and the UK National Academies. The Newton Researcher Links component is managed by the British Council and DOST.
