Skin and Bone: Interdisciplinary Analysis of Accidents, Injuries and Interpersonal Violence in Industrialising London

Dataset

Description

This repository contains datasets developed as part of the Skin and Bone project, funded by the British Academy and Leverhulme (BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grant, SG2122/210101).

The project sought to develop a 360-degree approach to the body by exploring patterns of injuries to both skin and bone between 1760 and 1901, using an
interdisciplinary approach that combined criminal, hospital, and osteoarcheological records. A total of 50,659 individuals are represented, with 87,903 injuries extracted from physical descriptions across eleven archival datasets.

The archival datasets were: Osteoarchaeological data: St. Bride’s lower churchyard (1770-1849) Royal London Hospital (1825-1841) Payne Road/Bow Baptist (1816-1854). 2) Hospital Records: General Hospital Admission Registers Middlesex (1760-64, 1771-88) Royal London (1760, 1791, 1792, 1805) Guy’s (1813-39) St. Thomas’ (1773-6, 1781-9, 1790-9, 1800-9). 3) Convict records: Millbank Prison Register (1816-1828) Home Office Prison Licenses (1853-1889) [split into two datasets Male and Female] Metropolitan Police Habitual Criminal Register (1881-1901).

The data was prepared using approaches derived from natural language processing namely term dictionaries and co-occurrence.
