Anna Barlow

Research student

Profile

I am currently a third year PhD student on the STOR-i programme. My research project in collaboration with JBA is concerned with the statistical modelling of extreme flood events and is supervised by Jonathan Tawn (Lancaster), Chris Sherlock (Lancaster) and Rob Lamb (JBA).

In 2015 I graduated from Durham University with a MMath in Mathematics. My master’s project involved analysing the uncertainty in rainfall-runoff models and piqued my interest in environmental applications of Statistics.

In the summer of 2014 I took part in the STOR-i internship. At the time I was already fairly certain I would do a PhD and I wanted a career which would make a positive impact in the ‘real world’. The STOR-i internship showed me how I could achieve both and made me certain of my decision to do research. I was also struck by the community atmosphere, how well it works both academically and socially, and realised this is the perfect environment to develop vital research and communication skills. My internship project, Spatial Modelling of Economic Data, was supervised by Christian Rohrbeck.
