Research overview

My research is concerned with decision making under uncertainty. In such problems actions are taken in response to current information about the environment you are operating in. My primary interest lies in developing novel solutions that describe the ‘best’ action to take in these random environments over time. This involves a range of methodologies from optimization, stochastic dynamic programming, simulation and approximate dynamic programming. Current and recent projects include:

  • Project scheduling
  • Nuclear decommissioning
  • Prediction and optimisation
  • Intelligence gathering
  • Workforce planning
  • Asset and portfolio management

PhD supervision

I welcome applications from prospective PhD students whose research interests fall broadly within "decision making under uncertainty", including methods such as stochastic dynamic programming, (stochastic/robust) optimisation, simulation and approximate dynamic programming/reinforcement learning. Projects concerning practical Operational Research problems in which these methods can be applied are of particular interest.
