I am currently (co-)supervising six PhD students and am interested in PhD proposals in the areas of:

interlanguage pragmatics, cross-cultural pragmatics, varitional pragmatics, pragmatic development, pragmatics and the study abroad context.

Research Interests

My primary research interest lies in interlanguage pragmatics, in particular the development of learners' pragmatic awareness and productive pragmatic competence in second language or study abroad contexts.

I am also interested in research methodological innovations in interlanguage pragmatics, especially in developing ways of eliciting data that are more contextualized and show more characteristics of naturally occurring data than speech collected with traditional DCTs. Based on these methodological considerations, I designed a new computerized multi-media data collection instrument, the Multimedia Elicitation Task (MET), to elicit spoken language.

Recently, I have also become interested in perceptions of impoliteness events in different cultures and languages. Further research interests include cross-cultural pragmatics and the employment of formulaic sequences in spoken interactions.

I am a member of the British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL) , the European Second Language Association (EUROSLA), the International Pragmatics Association (IPrA) and the Linguistic Politeness Research Group.
