Dr Jane Demmen

Formerly at Lancaster University

Profile

I am part of a team applying corpus linguistic methods to investigate language used in health(care) contexts. My focus at present is on understanding more about how people talk about pain. My other main research interest is in Early Modern English plays.

I have previously worked on corpus linguistic research projects investigating the language of Shakespeare’s plays (The Encyclopedia of Shakespeare’s Language; AHRC project AH/N002415/1), the semantics of labour relations in Hansard UK House of Commons debates (Semantic Annotation and Mark-Up for Enhancing Lexical Searches; AHRC/ESRC project AH/L010062/1), and the ways people experiencing or involved in end-of-life care use metaphors (Metaphor in End of Life Care; ESRC Project ES/J007927/1).
