Dr Jane Demmen

Formerly at Lancaster University

I am part of a team investigating the language of Shakespeare’s plays using corpus linguistic methods (AHRC project AH/N002415/1: The Encyclopaedia of Shakespeare’s Language). My research interests include historical linguistics and the stylistics of drama, with a particular focus on the application of corpus linguistic methods to investigate language styles in Early Modern English plays (by Shakespeare and other playwrights of the same era).

I am also interested in the use of corpus tools for semantic analysis. I have previously worked on corpus linguistic projects investigating the semantics of labour relations in Hansard House of Commons debates (Semantic Annotation and Mark-Up for Enhancing Lexical Searches; AHRC/ESRC project AH/L010062/1), and the use of metaphor by patients, carers and healthcare professionals involved in end-of-life care (Metaphor in End of Life Care; ESRC Project ES/J007927/1).
