Dr Laura Cariola

Formerly at Lancaster University

Profile

I am a final year PhD student and my research explores psychodynamic concepts of language behaviour, with specific reference to primordial thought and body boundaries, as well as metaphors, by focussing on the quantitative and qualitative content of projective test responses, autobiographical memories and therapeutic dialogues. I have published on this topic in relevant peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences.

In regards to teaching-related activities, I worked as an Academic Writing Mentor at the Faculty of the Arts and Social Sciences, helping undergraduate and postgraduate students with their academic writing, and in the previous years I taught on the 'Language of Advertisement' and 'Research Skills' seminars.

I was employed as a Research Assistant to work on the first UK Communicative Development Inventory at the Baby Lab in the Department of Psychology, and I also worked as a Researcher for the FASS Enterprise Centre. Since recently, I have been employed as a Research Assistant in Psychology at Cranfield University.

Due to my commitment to further interdisciplinary research within the fields of linguistics, cognitive sciences and psychodynamic theories, I founded together with my supervisor Dr. Andrew Wilson the open access journal Language and Psychoanalysis. The journal also echoes my personal interest in psychotherapy; thus I am working towards Hypno-Psychotherapy UKCP-accreditation.
