I am researching the cultural and social milieu of the late nineteenth century, focussing on the specific themes which enabled the formation of the Society for Psychical Research. My research addresses the complex and overlapping religious, scientific, scholarly, political, and literary occulture which fostered early theories about paranormal phenomena that expressed themes of universality and eclecticism.
