Research overview

My research is in creative industries management funded by the UK Research & Innovation (AHRC, ESRC) and the government and private sectors. My ESRC-funded research on television formats rights protection, which has had impact in the television format industry, focussed on the centrality of strategic behaviour and marketing strategies in the absence of copyright-type consistent legal protection for format rights. This has helped the TV format rights industry, and legal fraternity advising them, to extend exploitation and monetization of formats across territories. I am also interested in the use of big data, AI and other forms of technology in business.

PhD supervision

Potential PhD students interested in areas such as i) creative expressions thriving in the negative spaces of intellectual property protection, and ii) use of AI in marketing and business, are encouraged to get in touch.

Profile

I am a management academic with more than 20 years of British higher education experience in funded research, academic leadership and tertiary level teaching. I also hold judicial office as Tribunal Member at the Employment Tribunals (Scotland), adjudicating on employment disputes such as discrimination, harassment, victimisation, and unlawful detriments during employment.

I teach Marketing at the Lancaster University Management School. I also teach short courses such as Big Data Analytics in Marketing and Data Ethics for Business, at the University of Edinburgh (Bayes Centre and the Centre for Open Learning), where I was honoured in 2022 with an Exceptional Performance Contribution Reward.
