Abstract

This chapter looks at two different types of recent biopics involving new media and how the genre constructs itself around these aspects. By looking at the representation of new media itself from both diegetic and nondiegetic angles, it discusses how conventional genre boundaries are being pushed and how the ‘tangy word “biopic”’ is being reappropriated. The chapter discusses more widely the ways in which new media releases the genre from its formulaic recipe and constructs itself through new media representation. As the biopic extends its media reach and focuses more on the present, the binary between traditional and new approaches adjusts, and new elements emerge within biopic studies. The first part of the chapter focuses on the biopics of overt cultural and visionary figures within new media adapted to film. The second part looks at a more unusual and less self‐assured new media biopic.
