Bibliographic note

This collection of articles was one outcome of an ESRC seminar series on Adult Basic Education: Linking Policy, Practice and Research. It is edited by the three series organizers, and brings together contributions from key national and international figures in the field. Professor Lynn Tett was the primary editor, but MH played a significant role especially in writing the introduction which frames the collection. The collection shows in detail how it is possible to apply the research approach of the new literacy studies (literacy and numeracy as embedded social practices, rather than skills) to policy and practice contexts. This approach has subsequently been taken up in policy circles and through professional development courses in the Skills for Life area both in England and Scotland.
