Special Individual Circumstances. Contemporary British Women Artists: in their own words contains interviews with 20 international artists, conducted during an AHRC research project and an introductory essay. Each artist's interview underwent an exacting process of editing in a formalised collaboration between interviewer/editor and artist. It provides an important resource for researchers in the visual arts and is recommended reading by the British Council. The book includes a series of new black and white photographic portraits of the artists by myself, funded by the Arts Council of England. The 20 women selected for interview were internationally recognised artists, selected to represent a diversity of practice and age: Tacita Dean, Jane Harris, Maria Chevska, Gillian Ayres, Vanessa Jackson, Maria Lalic, Hayley Newman, Sonia Boyce, Anya Gallaccio, Paula Rego, Lucy Gunning, Christine Borland, Claire Barclay, Tania Kovats, Jemima Stehli, Emma Kay, Tomoko Takahashi, Tracey Emin, Jananne Al-Ani and Runa Islam. Fortnum's introduction to the book reflects on the interviews themselves, drawing out issues of the artist's influences and processes. She also outlines the current situation with regard to women artists' status in the UK. Other outcomes: lectures at New Hall, Cambridge University, UK Friends of the National Museum Women in the Arts, Washington DC; debate during an exhibition of the photographic portraits of the artists at the ArtSpace, Camberwell College, UAL, with the writers Paula Smithard and Reina Lewis; 4 x 10 min interviews with artists (Anya Gallaccio, Tacita Dean, Sonia Boyce and Paula Rego), BBC Radio 4, Women's Hour.
