In these drawings Davies analyses the external forces, internal dynamics and behaviour of a range of crowd types from the riotous mob to fleeing public. The ideas engaged with the study 'Crowds and Power' by the Bulgarian anthropologist and novelist Elias Canetti. Canetti, using anthropological methodology applies historical theoretical and psychological tools to describe their various beliefs and intentions. Davies's drawings recreate some of what Canetti leaves out, namely the spaces and places of liberation and the institutions of power that lies behind them. In Crowds and Power: School (76x94cms) Davies deploys a graphic language that mimics devices found in Expressionist film and theatre (e.g Nosferatu, Dir. Murnau, 1922) to create spaces and objects that excite, antagonise and manipulate crowds of figures. Davies's drawing was reproduced in the Independent (16 May 2006, p20), and in his review, Michael Grover commented 'Another wonderful evocation of atmosphere is a drawing by Gerry Davies, School. This is a curious scene, and again it is one glimpsed from above within a milky twilight. The school building with its pierced embrasures, is a rearing keep like presence, more prison than school, the children in the playground wraith like flashes of pale white, disembodied energy'. Additionally, Davies was invited to give a public lecture-The State of Play in British Drawing- to coincide with the exhibition. This group exhibition, curated by Hannah Neale and Edward King, aimed to survey contemporary British drawing in its depth and diversity.
