The role of HoDs in universities is little studied in the UK. This book is one of the few attempts here (in contrast to the US) to address this, and does so in a theoretically informed way. As a result it is frequently cited. The book situated departmental management in theoretical context of social practice theory, thus going beyond the provision of a mere handbook.
