Abstract

This short paper responds to Gabriel Meyer's article 'Ruskin and the California Dream' (The Ruskin Review, 15, 93–120). The paper draws comparisons between John Ruskin and his contemporary Walt Whitman to consider why Ruskin, despite his antipathy to American democracy, was embraced by utopian movements in different parts of the USA during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
